His hands cradled each piece
as he fit them together,
one by one.
Jagged edges pierced his skin as he worked,
tirelessly,
carefully,
relentlessly.
He ran his finger across each broken edge
before fitting them together,
and wept.
Slowly it took shape.
Its beauty could be seen with the first few pieces,
which seemed to fit together better than before.

on a day made for convertibles
full of anticipation
the weekend at last
blue skies fenced in orange
their journey began
two pledged friends
in search of the perfect picnic spot
