Proverbs 30:19
When Matt Lee comes up with a
new theory of the universe,
atoms shake in their nakedness.
Birds change their migratory routes.
And the incidence of holes in one and
perfect three-hundreds shoots up sky-high.
Theories keep count with pina coladas as
sand sifts through his toes. The sun looses its
arrogance and he explains more and more.
Unclassified molecules line up at his feet.
Hoping to get named. Cats of mixed breed
wanting to know their origins. All
passed over for the wispy clouds
overhead. They leave, hope broken.
When Matt Lee completes a puzzle,
everything fits. Even the extra
pieces. Theories get better as the sun
gives up and the waitresses turn prettier.
There is nothing he can’t explain.
World hunger would have been solved
had the problem been more interesting.
His head jiggles back to take
in a flopply bird. And almost catches a fly.
He dreams of a new dance style.
Something between the Samba and a
Viennese Waltz. And adds a chapter to the
Kama Sutra. Surprised only by his bar tab,
Matt completes his work
and closes his eyes. He dreams of a
girl he used to know. And remembers he
doesn’t know everything.
